Winning money at poker can be a long process. You will throw away many more hands than you ever play. You must develop a style that suits your personality but one that keeps you in the winners column. Before you even set down to the table you should have a plan. Know at what time into the play you will alter your style. Know how much you are willing to invest in the game. Know how much you have already invested in the game. Gas, food, travel time, etc. Keep a running account. Write it down as soon as you are able. Your poker plan must also include a list of hands that you are willing to play. It must include at least two bluffs wherein you re caught at it. The plan must include a bet schedule that you will use depending on position. but do not get lost in the raises and reraises. Too many of the poker players, if you could call them that, call every hand. You need to find a game that will not temp you to do as they do. As in everything you do in reality what you train to do in practice. There is the classic story of a Police officer who when training on the firing range was taught to fire six rounds and then stop and pick up his ejected brass. When he was drawn into a real gun fight that is exactly what he did. He fired six rounds, stopped, and picked up his brass. He was, unfortunately, killed. Poker is a lot less serious than a gun fight and you will do as you are trained. The reason most people can't win at poker is that they play too many hands. There is no shame in dropping your hole cards into the muck pile. Think of it as saving money. If you are going to win at Texas Holdem Poker or any other poker game you should spend lots of time thinking about how to avoid spending money. In pot limit games do you really want to bet as much that's in the pot to win the same amount. It is like betting a dollar to win a dollar. Not a good idea unless you have the nuts hand. |
