You should know that if you do not have a hand after the flop that you should not be in the game. Muck your cards and stare at the cocktail waitress. If you have not flopped a set with you Pocket Pair it is most likely a losing hand. if you see a pair flop and you have two pair you might as well figure that some one else has three of a kind. What are the odds that you are going to fill the full house? Not good. Muck your cards. Texas Holdem and Position If you have only played online and never played in a casino you will be astounded by the importance of position when you do. Of course, playing online will give you some hint of how important your bet position is but it is driven home by the physical world of the casino. If you can afford the time and money then you should go and play at a real world poker room at least once. It will vastly improve your online game. Besides: It's fun. For a Texas Holdem poker player there are some choices to make: The high average pot game. Be it Texas Holdem, 7 card stud, or Omaha will be full of folks who have no idea how to play poker. They typically have the max raise going on for almost every card. You will have seven or eight people calling the hand after the river. I only play in these games when I want to practice patience. It is kind of fun sitting back, dumping hand after hand and waiting. About two or three times an hour I will get delt a hand that has some promise. If they don't show the same promise after the flop, I dump those too. The mid range pot game is a lot better. You will see some folks that actually know how to play poker and will respect your raises and catch on quick that you are playing a tight fisted poker game. I don't spend too much time in these because the mixture of players does not really reflect what will happen in a real money hold em game. The game that shows it has a low average pot is my cup of tea. Most of the time, not always, you will find real poker players. Folks that are really trying to learn how to play Holdem or players who are brushing up on their skills. Lots of times I will play in a free Holdem game before I switch over to real money poker, just to see how the cards are falling. I know, I know. How the cards are falling in a free poker game do not have a damn thing to do with what will happen in a real money game. Poker players are superstitious, and I am one of them.
