When you play in a poker tournament, pay particular attention to the two people to your left. Once you have passed the button on to them you may be able to buy it back with a raise. Raising in late position will confuse the enemy. He will not be entirely sure of the reason for the raise. Are you running a bluff? Are you looking for information? Or are you just trying to get folks out of the game because you do not have a real strong hand like AK? If you have AA or KK you should be raising anyway. You are sitting with the best pre-flop hand with Ace,Ace. It is time to try and drive as many out of the game as possible. Make them take a long hard look at what they can gain(The size of the pot) compared what they have to risk to get it. You do not want someone holding suited hole cards to be able to see the flop on the cheap. Even if you hold Ace, King and draw the not straight he can beat you with a flush. Make him pay to see the flop.

card stud Tournament play in Texas
Holdem is a lot different than playing in a regular game and
requires a different poker strategy. A poker tournament is a
battle for chips. The money payoff goes to the players at
the last table. There are some high money tournaments now.
Some with prizes going into the multi millions of dollars.
Whether you play in a million dollar poker tournament or a
local tournament for a bag of beans. The poker strategy is
the same.
Playing in a tournament is a
lot different than playing in a money game. The tournament
play is all about protecting your stack as you move closer
to the final table. When you begin sit back, relax, and let
the other players beat each other up. You want to be in a
tight conservative mode. Get aggressive only when you have a
terrific hand, call an All In bet only when you have the nut
straight, flush, or full house. Protect your chip stack at
all costs. If you have a set be very aware of how many over
cards there are to beat you.
As you move up to other
tables in the tournament you can begin to play more
agressivily but you should still be concerned about your
stack. It is only when you reach the final table that you
can move into the tight agressive mode. Which simply means
that you limit the number of hands that you play. But when
you play it is balls to the wall agressive. This is the time
that you either raise or fold. If you can call a bet then
you can raise the bet.
Don't give up the dream
of winning a Million Dollar Texas Holdem Poker
Tournament
But lets be practical about
it. You have to learn to walk before you can run. Plunking
down $10,000 dollars to enter a Vegas tournament is probably
getting ahead of yourself. There are many tournaments around
with a buy in of from ten to twenty dollars. You may not get
anywhere near the final table but the experience and
practice is well worth the money.
The big break for Online
Texas Holdem Poker came in 2003 when Chris Moneymaker won
the World Series of Poker. He won his $10,000 seat in Las
Vegas by playing in a $40.00 online satellite tournament.
Moneymaker walked away from the final table with $2.5
million in his jeans.
He had learned the survival
lesson well. In a tournament survival to the final table is
what it is all about. Your stack of chips is of the greatest
importance in a Holdem tournament. Quite simply, you do not
get into the hand with crap. Do that more than a few times
and you will lose all your chips and be out of the game. In
a regular game you can always rebuy chips. Tournaments, not
so. Playing too loose at the beginning of a tournament can
sink you fast. Just because you have lots of chips the
temptation is to chase a few hands. You should have thought
out your strategy before you sat down at the table. Decide
what hands that you are willing to play taking into
consideration your position on the table, size of your
stack, the size of other people stacks. Think hard about
what hands you are willing to raise pre flop. All that is
easy. What is really hard is having the discipline to stick
to your game plan. If you are looking for adrenaline rush
hand after hand you are going to be disappointed. Tournament
play is grinding. It is a lot of work just keeping track of
the elements of the tournament. The time is important. How
much time is left to play that stage of the tournament. Near
the end you will have to shift your stradagy to more
agressive play. You want to knock out the small stack
players but at the same time let them knock each other out
if you can. The blinds and antes escalate as the tournament
progresses. Keep a running estimation of how many hands that
you can play before being blinded out. Always remember that
the chips you have left really are the chips you have left.
You can't buy any more. Take your ego out of it. Recognize
what player or players are better than you and avoid butting
heads with them unless you have great cards.
If you are the kind of
person who wants everyone to be happy and think that
competition is harsh, then poker tournaments are not for
you. It is an old saying, "All a player needs to beat you is
a chip and a seat." Never miss an opportunity to take away
both. If you are playing against someone who is hort stacked
make it your business to be sure that every one of their
chips winds up in the pot.
